This evening I settled down to watch the live feed of the inaugural Great British Pantomime Awards. I couldn’t make it to the event so was thrilled to be able to watch the proceedings via the wonder of the inter-web.

I was delighted to have my Basildon Towngate ‘Sleeping Beauty’ nominated in the best script category alongside Christian Patterson, Morgan Brind and Andrew Pollard, all masters in their field. Best Script was ultimately won by Christian Patterson for his ‘Cinderella’ in Stoke. I managed to tweet him a ‘well done’ through my tears.

However, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ was also nominated for Pantomime of the year in the under 750 capacity category and we won! It was up against some tough competition so it was wonderful to have the show recognised in this way. Simon Fielding who directs, stars and choreographs the Basildon Towngate Pantomimes really does deserve the recognition for the amount of love he lavishes on the show each and every year. It’s a full time job to him and I’m as proud as punch.

Other notable award winners were Evolution pantomimes for ‘Panto of the year’ in the 750-1500 capacity category and my good friend Damian Williams for Dame of the year. Both richly deserved awards.

It’s great that Pantomime is gaining the recognition it deserves and credit needs to go to the founders of the awards Simon Sladen, Daniel Dawson, Sam Munday-Webb and Millie Taylor
