As a family we started going on long walks during the 2020 lockdown, the long walks started getting longer and longer until they became hikes, sometimes 18 miles in a day!
Initially the boys weren't so keen but as we clocked away the miles they started getting fitter, getting along better and enjoying following the route on their 'map apps'
We have over the years raised money for various Childrens charities but for the past couple of years we have concentrated on a not for profit called 'Re Ya Kgola' which means 'we are growing' and they certainly are. Re Ya Kgola was started by a wonderful woman called Ma Lillian who started cooking meals for the orphaned children in her village in South Africa. As time passed more and more children were taken care of by Ma Lillian and today she and her tram of volunteers provide support to about 320 single mothers and children. In addition to this she provides a hot meal three times a week to 125 pensioners, many being unable to provide or cook for themselves.
Ma relies on donations to keep providing the much needed support and that's where the boys got their idea to combine their new found love of hiking and helping others.
This August the boys are doing a sponsored hike of the Cleveland Way. Cleveland Way winds for around 175km around the North York Moors National Park, from the ancient town of Helmsley to the seafront of Filey.
The boys started a JustGiving page and reached their initial target of £1000 in 8 days, we couldn't be prouder of them. If you have a chance to take a look please do, and of course donate if you can, we want them to smash their target and keep the wolf from the door for Ma Lillian just a little while longer.
Point your phone camera to the QR code below and it'll take you straight to their page, the wonders of modern technology eh!
